Pediatric Medical Social Worker, JBLM CAC Coordinator Child Abuse Intervention Department, Mary Bridge Children's Hospital

On April 6, 1998 Deshunda Mitchell began working at Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital as a Pediatric Medical Social Worker. Deshunda joined the team in the Child Abuse Intervention Department. As a Pediatric Medical Social Worker she is responsible for psychosocial assessments and interventions regarding children who are suspected victims of child maltreatment. Deshunda participates in pediatric crisis intervention through the emergency department, sexual assault program, physical assault program and pediatric outpatient programs. Deshunda works collaboratively with law enforcement, Child Protection Services, Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, mental health agencies, Joint Base Lewis McChord, multiple Pierce County public schools, Puyallup Tribe and others under the umbrella of the Child Advocacy Center of Pierce County (CAC). She consults with patients, families, community physicians and all agencies within the CAC. Deshunda has provided training at Child Protection Services, Puyallup Tribe, Safe Streets, and employees of MultiCare Health System’s, Women’s Correctional Facility of Washington and various Rotary Clubs. Deshunda continues to strive toward effective parent, family and community education, in an effort to intervene in situations of child abuse and keeping children safe from child maltreatment.
