Introduction to the Military Legal System

There are several systems that Children’s Advocacy Centers should be familiar with in order to effectively serve children in military families. This webinar will provide an introductory orientation the military legal system. Participants will learn about the Uniformed Code of Military Justice and the differences between civilian and military legal systems as well as the roles of the special victim prosecutor, the special victim witness liaison, and the civilian litigation experts who make up military child abuse prosecution teams. Participants will also gain an understanding of the unique challenges of prosecuting cases involving active duty military members and military families. Opportunity for Q&A will follow the presentation.

LTC Alexander R. Schneider

U.S. Army Judge Advocate

LTC Alex Schneider is a U.S. Army Judge Advocate currently serving as the Chief of the Trial Counsel Assistance Program, United States Army Legal Services Agency, Fort Belvoir Virginia.  He is responsible for the supervision of all U.S. Army Special Victim Prosecutors and the training programs for Army prosecutors worldwide. 

Previously he served as the Special Victim Prosecutor for 7th Army Training Command and United States Army Africa – Southern European Task Force.  In this role, he has prosecuted, or supervised the prosecution of over 70 special victim cases involving Soldiers stationed in Germany and Italy.

LTC Schneider’s recent military experience has been primarily in criminal prosecution and national security law.  He deployed to eastern Afghanistan with a Brigade Combat Team in 2013.  He deployed to Iraq as a military prosecutor in 2008.  He also served for two years as the Special Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Fort Bragg, NC military reservation.

LTC Schneider graduated from the United States Military Academy with a Bachelor of Science degree. He holds a Law degree from the Mississippi College School of Law and a Masters of Law degree from the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General’s Legal Center and School.  He completed the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas in 2016.
